Podcast Research

Definition
"a multimedia digital file made available on the Internet for downloading to a portable media player, computer, etc."  - Google.com

Existing Work
(All podcasts found on www.apple.com/uk/itunes/)

Science Weekly, The Gaurdian
This podcast starts off with five seconds of sound while a voiceover says 'The Guardian',
there is then a sponsored advert which lasts for fifteen seconds and then it goes straight into
the podcast. Alok Jha (the presenter for the podcast) firstly introduces himself and his topic
and then delves straight into the main content. He talks about his topic for 45 minuets and includes
interviews with guests and external voice clips. At the end of the podcast Alok Jha says thanks and
goodbye and outro music plays for 10 seconds, the sponsored advert then plays again.
I would say this podcast is aimed at adults who are interested in extending their knowledge of science,
the podcast is very informative and packed full of information.

Listen and Play, BBC
This podcast by the BBC is aimed at children and teaches them literacy skills in a fun and engaging way.
The podcast again starts of with a 10 second intro introducing the podcast and subject and then goes straight
into a song, this podcast includes sound effects and music all throughout to keep it engaging for children.
At the end of this podcast the presenter sings goodbye and music is played for 20 seconds.

Disclosure Minmix, BBC
This is a music podcast by the BBC, this podcast is very short and compact. The introduction music lasts
for 5 seconds and then goes straight into the DJ introducing the podcast, this lasts around 5 seconds and
the songs are played for around 5 minuets. At the end of the music the DJ then says thanks for downloading
and outro music is played for 4 seconds.

My Research / My Approach

My Research
The research I have conducted primarily talks about how social networking sites (mainly Facebook and Twitter) are effecting our private lives, I found a lot of interesting articles about how peoples lack of concern for their privacy has landed them in trouble and I want to mention a few of these stories within my podcast to make people aware of the consequences of social networking.

I also want to spend some time in my podcast talking about 'The Privacy Bargain' mentioning Cory Doctorow and talking about how social networking sites are selling user data as I feel this fits in nicely with The Privacy Bargain. This is a topic which I found interesting and one which I had never thought about before, therefore I thought it would be good to mention within my podcast to make others aware too.

Target Audience
The primary target of my podcast is teenagers, I feel these are the people who use social networking sites the most, therefore they will be the ones most interested in learning about the subject. I also feel that more and more teenagers are getting concerned about privacy issues and so it will be good for them to understand the issues surrounding these sites and listen to a discussion around the topic.

My Approach / Plan
Within my podcast I have decided to include my research on:
  • Statistics
  • News articles which will make people think
  • The Privacy Bargain / Cory Doctorow
  • Facebook selling users Data
  • My opinions, as I am an avid social network user
I want to take an informative approach to this podcast, I want to make my audience aware of the issues surrounding social networking and privacy and I want them to understand the consequences, this is why I am going to mention real news stories in my podcast so that it makes my audience realise the seriousness of social networking.

.. More Statistics

The World is Obsessed with Facebook

Statistics

Above are statistics about Google+, Linked-in, Facebook and Twitter.

One interesting statistic I noticed was, as you can see from the graph above, Facebook by far has the most users, with Google+ next and Twitter closely behind but surprisingly Twitter is the social networking site by far in which users are most likely to share a story.
